Support for Beekeeping for Biodiversity

PEPAC

With the aim of contributing to the conservation of bees, preserving pollination and restoring the biodiversity of native flora by supporting the maintenance of bee populations, this incentive aims to support SMEs in the beekeeping sector that intend to implement measures in this direction. Support is granted in the form of a subsidy over a three-year period.

Incentive Conditions

  • This intervention grants a payment to beneficiaries who agree to adopt defined production practices and methods, compensating for the loss of alternative income (opportunity cost) resulting from the commitment to maintain beekeeping activity.
  • This intervention contributes to the following PEPAC goals:
    • Halting and reversing biodiversity loss, improving ecosystem services and preserving habitats and landscapes.
  • National Territory.
  • Natural or legal persons, public or private, who undertake to fulfill the commitments of the action for a minimum period of 3 years.
  • Own a duly registered beekeeping farm in accordance with Decree-Law no. 203/2005 of November 25;
  • Have bee colonies, with the apiaries georeferenced;
  • Have an up-to-date beekeeping activity register and annual stock declaration;
  • Have at least 10 hives (per beneficiary);
  • The apiaries must be at least:
    • 400 meters, when the apiaries have between 11 and 30 hives;
    • 800 meters, when the apiaries have between 31 and 100 hives.
  • Maintain the eligibility conditions for the three years of the commitment period;
  • Register the relevant data on an electronic platform, including for digitization and sharing;
  • Keep the beekeeping activity register and annual stock declaration up to date;
  • Ensure that each apiary has no more than 100 hives;
  • For the purposes of transhumance, the number of hives installed may not be less than 25% in the apiaries receiving support. After the transhumance period, the apiaries must recover their original size;
  • Ensure that the apiaries are part of the health plan of a beekeepers’ organization;
  • Have the farm integrated into the technical assistance provided by a beekeepers’ organization, thus ensuring that the apiaries remain in good production conditions, particularly with regard to wax quality, reproductive management and food management.
  • The level of support for this intervention is granted in the form of a fixed unit amount paid to the beneficiary, depending on the bracket they are in.
